Don’t miss one of the highlights of the holiday season in Deltaville, riding down Lover’s Lane and cruising Jackson Creek to see the Christmas decorations. Sponsored by the Deltaville Community Association, the ride and cruise are an opportunity for residents and visitors to sightsee from the water and then return to socialize with their neighbors. Repairs to the DCA building are still underway, so this year’s festivities will be at the Philippi Church Fellowship Hall, across the street and down the block from the DCA Community Center.

The Rappahannock River Railroad Club will again set up a display of model trains this year in the Philippi Fellowship Hall. Children of all ages will delight in watching the model trains circle their tracks.

On Friday evening, December 9th, the first cruise will leave at 4:30 pm from the Philippi parking lot with a hayride to the town dock. This is 30 minutes earlier than usual and allows riders to see a beautiful sunset and the lighted Christmas decorations.

The charter boat Tortuga, owned and captained by Bubbie Crown will take passengers for a tour of both branches of Jackson Creek. Tortuga, a 57’ twin engine charter boat, carries forty passengers at a time. Tickets can be purchased in advance for cruises at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 pm at Nauti Nell’s, J & W Seafood, and Parts City. Tickets are limited to 40 passengers per cruise and are a real bargain at $5.00 for adults (13 and up). Tickets for children, 12 years and younger, are free, but every child must have a ticket and be accompanied by an adult. Tickets include home made cookies and apple cider after the cruise.

Those residents on Lover’s Lane and on Jackson Creek are asked to decorate their homes for our visitors. Deltaville will be in the spotlight this particular evening and we want to make an impressive showing. The DCA needs help collecting tickets, loading passengers on the hay wagons, for setting up and serving cookies and cider, and also at the dock loading passengers. A large supply of homemade cookies will also be needed. If you can share your time or talents, please contact Bob Walker at 804-694-9139, Raynell Smith at 804-815-3102, or Marsha Norton at 804-815-1071.

In case of threatening weather, cruises will be rescheduled for Saturday, December 10th , same time and place. Call Nauti Nell’s to confirm a cancellation-776-9811.

The F.D. Crockett Rolls! Next Stop, Urbanna.

At Oyster Festival Nov. 3rd-5th

 by Bill Powell

The hard working F. D. Crockett, pride of the Deltaville Maritime Museum, will be carrying the message of the history of Bay watermen, their fisheries and their boat building methods to Urbanna at the end of next week. Gosh, you may even find out what the heck a “buyboat” is.

The Crockett will arrive at Upton Point on Sunday afternoon, October 30th. Her gracious lines can be viewed from the Urbanna Town Marina dock from Sunday evening through Wednesday. On Thursday she and the Reedville Fisherman Museum’s “Elva C.” and their respective crews will join together as part of the Oyster Festival “Education Day.”

During “Education Day” these restored classic buyboats will present a hands-on program for students on the role of buyboats in the Chesapeake Bay during the past century. The 4th and 7th grade students from Middlesex, Aylett Country Day School, Ware Academy and Chesapeake Academy will all participate in this opportunity to learn by seeing and doing. Education Day is reserved for the students and is not open to the general public.

Chuck McGhinnis, Museum Boat Shop Director and board member will be coordinating and organizing the program for “Education Day”.

“For a lot of these students, this may be the only chance they have or will have to actually walk on and experience a piece of our Bay history. We want them, when the day is over, to have a feel for what our watermen did and what it was like to work on the water. This is what our Museum and its outreach is all about.” Chuck pointed out.

On Friday, November 4, Oyster Festival opening day, the Crockett will have crew aboard from 10am-5pm for full tours and Q & A. Saturday hours will be from 9am-4pm. She will return to the Deltaville Museum on Sunday.

Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park, an all volunteer, all donation, non-profit organization, is located in Deltaville, VA. at 287 Jackson Creek Road. To get to the Museum and Park, follow Route 33 through Deltaville and turn right across from the Shell Station. Holly Point Nature Park is open all year from dawn til dusk. The Museum area is now a wi-fi hot spot. The Museum itself is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm and Sunday 1-4pm.

To find out more about the Museum, its offerings, open hours, events schedule, event tickets, donate, become a member, donate or volunteer, visit our new website at www.deltavillemuseum.com , or Google “Deltaville Maritime Museum”.
