Museum Exhibit 2009
This is the year the museum honors our first president, Tim Blackwood, and the approximately 70 founding members of our organization with a new display in the entrance hall. In the boat building room all the contributors to the building and campaigning of Captain John Smith's shallop, Explorer, have also been recognized.
The first room of the new exhibit focuses on the working craft of the Chesapeake with photos, artwork, and a dozen exceptional models. A portion of this exhibit explores log boat building techniques and details the marvelous restoration of the nine-log bottomed F.D. Crockett, currently underway at the museum's dock. Included in this display are photos of the boat during her working days, and photos of how she looked when she arrived at the museum. There is a chronological set of photos of the extensive rebuild of the F.D. Crockett. When you've seen this exhibit you must visit the boat itself at our pier. Thousands of volunteer hours have gone into this project led by John England and his crew.
In the boat building room information has been added about Buddy Sable, who built boats on Moore's Creek and about Capt. Dewey Norton. The display on Willard Norris has been expanded and a whole new write-up on Walden Brother Marina and Deagle's Marine Railway have been added. Don't miss the photos of the two building projects that were completed at the museum: the Apprentice, the tender to the schooner Virginia and the James River bateau, Lady's Slipper.
Our final exhibit room is full of memorabilia and photos from Deltaville's past. 2009 marks the 100th anniversary of the naming of Deltaville. In December of 1909 the name of the post office officially changed from Sandy Bottom to Deltaville. In the exhibit is a history of the area post offices and their postmasters. Also, in stories and photos are the history of the local schools, historic homes, churches, hotels, and all the old country stores. Panels of the exhibit deal with local calamities, Deltaville heroes, Stove Point, and the ancestral families of Deltaville.
The new exhibit will be in place until the end of the year. Call the museum to confirm days and hours of operation.
