Spring 2009
Dear Friends of the Museum,
The Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park is looking forward to an exciting season of activities for the residents of Middlesex County and our visitors from all over. I have enclosed a brochure that explains what is planned for the coming year.
A few events I would like to highlight: On Friday evening, May 1st, a Members' Gala honoring our local watermen will be held, with all proceeds going to the buyboat F. D. Crockett restoration project. If you did not receive an invitation in the mail, please call Bill Powell at 804-776-9738, and one will be sent to you.
On Saturday, May 2nd, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., the Working Watermen’s Weekend will showcase workboats and interesting educational displays demonstrating techniques that local watermen use. President Ken Smith of the Virginia Watermen’s Association will speak on the current state of the industry and author Larry Chowning will add some local stories. The Museum will be opening for the season with many new displays and a 100th Anniversary of Deltaville display. If you have any historical items you would like to contribute to this display, please contact Raynell Smith at 804-776-9811.
On Saturday, September 12th, our Annual Membership Meeting and Oyster Roast will be held. On the menu will be steamed oysters, burgers, hot dogs and beverages. Also, a bluegrass band will perform for your enjoyment. At the membership meeting we will have a presentation by a guest speaker from the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences (VIMS).
Some interesting facts about the museum and park: Over 20,000 guests and members visit each year. To provide the benefits they enjoy, it takes one volunteer hour and costs us $10.00 for each visitor. This is a very high bar for us to reach both for volunteers and funding, especially during the challenges of the ongoing economic crisis. Please consider offering your help either as a volunteer or through a contribution. And, if you’re not already a member, please think about joining.
Sincerely,
