Piankatank River Historic Waterway Trail

The Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park has formed a committee to establish the Piankatank River Historic Waterway Trail.

Our goals for this effort are as follow:

  • To encourage residents and visitors to appreciate and care for our historic river.
  • To research, compile, and relate the history of the river through its many historic eras: Native American, exploration, colonization, Revolutionary War, pre- and Civil War, and 20th Century.
  • To chronicle the role of commerce throughout the river's history.
  • To promote locally, regionally and nationally, tourism on the river and in its environs.
  • To encourage development of public access to the river.

The Deltaville Maritime Museum, as a repository of Middlesex County and Chesapeake Bay maritime history, and as a portal to the John Smith National Historic Water Trail, is in a position to provide a focus for local, regional, and national efforts to establish this historic trail. We propose forming a committee of interested parties, to establish this trail in some form by summer 2010.
