The Deltaville Maritime Museum and the Middlesex County Museum will co-host a program on the Battle of Gaines Mill as part of the state’s commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Jon Stallard will present the program on the battle, sometimes also known as the First Battle of Cold Harbor. Fought on June 27, 1862, as part of the Seven Days Battles, it was a significant Confederate victory and the beginning of the end of McClellan’s Peninsula Campaign. There is a direct connection between this battle and many families in Middlesex whose relatives fought there. Jon Stallard holds degrees in history, political science, and education from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is an author, lecturer, and genealogist. Mr. Stallard has lectured on General Lee and recently conducted classes on Grant’s overland campaign. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
