The agenda was full for the first 2013 meeting of the Deltaville Community Association last Thursday. Carolyn Schmalenberger has returned for a second term as DCA president, assisted by Vice-President Keith Ruse, Treasurer John Koedel and Secretaries Theresa Lynn and Kris Scherer.
The first order of business was a discussion about formalizing membership for the DCA. In the past anyone in the community was considered a member; there has never been an application or dues. The board felt that is would increase the influence of the DCA if they had a known membership. Also, by creating this membership, the board would be able to communicate with individuals in the community more easily. Agreeing that “dues” would be nominal, the board was asked to think about this change and bring ideas back to the February meeting.
The board next considered sponsorship for the 4th of July fireworks. In the past, the DCA has sponsored and supplied any shortfall for the purchase of fireworks. This year a majority of board members voted against taking money from the general fund for this purpose. “We all love the fireworks,” noted President Schmalenberger, “but in these hard economic times we need to consider how best to spend undesignated money donated by the community.” The board is asking for another sponsor from the community willing to collect the $4000.00 needed for the fireworks’ display.
After the tornado, the pool, the tennis courts, and the playground have been refurbished, but the basketball court is still in need of serious repairs. Bids have been taken to resurface and paint the court. Members noted how often all the above facilities are used by children and adults in the area.
By the end of March, Lew Grimm will finish installing new security cameras to monitor the DCA property. The cameras are meant to create a more secure environment for visitors and to help protect the buildings and grounds.
Although the goal of the DCA has always been to improve the quality of life in Deltaville, the actual mission statement for the organization will be broadened. Board members will be working on a new mission statement to be used in grant applications as well as in publicity materials.
For the last year, members of the DCA board have been working on projects to attract additional customers and tourists to our area. We would support an economic development/tourism director for Middlesex County, should this be considered. We believe it would be extremely helpful to insure the success of economic development efforts and tourist attraction endeavors.
Finally, the board welcomed a new member. Beth Hurd, our representative on the Board of Supervisors for the Pinetop district, has agreed to serve on the DCA board.
Plans are just beginning for activities at the pool, the ballpark, and for Heritage Day on July 6, 2013. Get in on the fun! Come join the DCA and help make your community the best it can be.

acknowledge and thank all of the following people and companies that did so much
to help us re-build following the Tornado of April 16, 2011. We did our very best to keep
track of everyone that helped and apologize should we have missed anyone. The spirit
of the community and the people that consider Deltaville as their second home was
overwhelming. We hope that you will save this document as a remembrance of just what

Jackson Creek Christmas Cruise-Tickets Now on Sale

Don’t miss one of the highlights of the holiday season in Deltaville, riding down Lover’s Lane and cruising Jackson Creek to see the Christmas decorations. Sponsored by the Deltaville Community Association, the ride and cruise are an opportunity for residents and visitors to sightsee from the water and then return to socialize with their neighbors. Repairs to the DCA building are still underway, so this year’s festivities will be at the Philippi Church Fellowship Hall, across the street and down the block from the DCA Community Center.
The Rappahannock River Railroad Club will again set up a display of model trains this year in the Philippi Fellowship Hall. Children of all ages will delight in watching the model trains circle their tracks.
On Friday evening, December 9th, the first cruise will leave at 4:30 pm from the Philippi parking lot with a hayride to the town dock. This is 30 minutes earlier than usual and allows riders to see a beautiful sunset and the lighted Christmas decorations.
The charter boat Tortuga, owned and captained by Bubbie Crown will take passengers for a tour of both branches of Jackson Creek. Tortuga, a 57’ twin engine charter boat, carries forty passengers at a time. Tickets can be purchased in advance for cruises at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 pm at Nauti Nell’s, J & W Seafood, and Parts City. Tickets are limited to 40 passengers per cruise and are a real bargain at $5.00 for adults (13 and up). Tickets for children, 12 years and younger, are free, but every child must have a ticket and be accompanied by an adult. Tickets include home made cookies and apple cider after the cruise.
Those residents on Lover’s Lane and on Jackson Creek are asked to decorate their homes for our visitors. Deltaville will be in the spotlight this particular evening and we want to make an impressive showing. The DCA needs help collecting tickets, loading passengers on the hay wagons, for setting up and serving cookies and cider, and also at the dock loading passengers. A large supply of homemade cookies will also be needed. If you can share your time or talents, please contact Bob Walker at 804-694-9139, Raynell Smith at 804-815-3102, or Marsha Norton at 804-815-1071.
In case of threatening weather, cruises will be rescheduled for Saturday, December 10th , same time and place. Call Nauti Nell’s to confirm a cancellation-776-9811.

The F.D. Crockett Rolls! Next Stop, Urbanna.
At Oyster Festival Nov. 3rd-5th
by Bill Powell
The hard working F. D. Crockett, pride of the Deltaville Maritime Museum, will be carrying the message of the history of Bay watermen, their fisheries and their boat building methods to Urbanna at the end of next week. Gosh, you may even find out what the heck a “buyboat” is.
The Crockett will arrive at Upton Point on Sunday afternoon, October 30th. Her gracious lines can be viewed from the Urbanna Town Marina dock from Sunday evening through Wednesday. On Thursday she and the Reedville Fisherman Museum’s “Elva C.” and their respective crews will join together as part of the Oyster Festival “Education Day.”

Deltaville is healing two months after tornado
MIDDLE PENINSULA
A test. That’s how folks in Deltaville define the past two months.
A test of backbone and body, of community and commitment. A sweat-soaked trial that began with a few seconds of terror on April 16, when at least 10 tornadoes swooped out of the sky over southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.
No one was injured in this waterside village – a “miracle” that’s not lost on the locals. But a church, businesses and more than 50 homes were destroyed or heavily damaged, a huge hit in a town with just 800 or so residents.
Not everyone rose to the occasion. A spray-painted sign leaning against a splintered tree carries advice for those who slipped in to gawk or steal: “If you don’t live or work here, stay the hell out.” Mostly though, says 74-year-old William Norton, a lifelong resident: “I’m so proud of my people, I almost want to cry.”
